COVID-19 Update

COVID-19 April 3 Update
Posted on 04/03/2020

Dear Fife School District Community,

Yesterday, Governor Inslee announced that our state’s Stay Home, Stay Healthy initiative will be extended until May 4th. While he did not make a specific announcement about schools, we are obviously planning for our schools to be closed at least until May 4th. Should schools be closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, in order to slow the spread of COVID-19 Coronavirus, we will certainly be in contact with you ASAP. As for now, all schools in the district will remain closed until May 4th.

As we head into next week and what was originally scheduled as “spring break”, we acknowledge that continued school closures are difficult on students, staff, families and the entire community. This is disappointing for students, who miss their friends and teachers. The extended closure also raises numerous questions for students and families. We are working quickly to answer your questions as soon as possible. In the meantime, here is what we know now:

  • Distance learning will continue in the same format we started as long as schools are closed. We are committed to continuing to partner with families and community to support our students’ learning while they are at home.
    • We worked yesterday, and continued the same today, in getting chromebooks to as many elementary students as needed. Our technology department will provide this support for any family that needs it.
  • If your child still needs a device, please visit our technology department’s website for information.
  • With the guidance of OSPI and the State Board of Education, our high school seniors will receive support from their administrators, teachers and guidance counselors on what this closure means for them. We know there are a lot of questions with regards to not only the graduation ceremony, but with all of the activities that accompany graduation. These are horrible circumstances for our class of 2020 but we will do everything we can to make the end of the K-12 journey memorable and celebratory!
  • We will continue to provide meals via our Fife Feeds program next week and beyond.
  • Child care will continue to be available in a limited capacity for children of first responders and health care workers.
  • All field trips and events, including sports, socials and dances, are canceled during this extended closure.
  • We are awaiting information from the Governor on whether school facilities will be open to provide summer school if the school year is indeed over.

In the meantime, please, stay home as much as possible and stay healthy. Even while staying at home, it is important to practice excellent hygiene and sanitation. Staying home and limiting person-to-person contact appears to be making a difference in slowing the spread of COVID-19, but those measures need to continue in order to be effective long-term. As much as possible, stay home, limit trips outside for groceries, gas and essentials, and stay 6 feet apart from people outside of your home.

Additionally:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces.
  • Stay at home away from others if you are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands.

We are thinking of you and your families.  Please continue to be safe and healthy!  We will be in contact soon.

Sincerely,
Kevin
