Common Questions (Parents)           Common Questions (Students/Click Here)

See below

How is Special Education delivered differently at SLMS from what my child receives at the elementary school? At SLMS your child (like all the children) are transitioned into a secondary setting with different subjects taught by experts in that field.  They will go to all the same classes as their peers unless their IEP calls for them to get specially designed instruction for their disabilty.  They do not get pulled from classes to get help, they take courses designed to provide help.  In addition, we provide teacher assistant help in general education classrooms as needed to help ensure academic success.
Will other students know that my child is in Special Education classes? the majority of special needs students go about school and other students never even know that they have a disability.  Mr. Crudo has a classroom like every other teacher so peers who make the connection will know.
I used to be able to go to my child's Special Education teacher to get all my questions answered....who do I go to now? The reason we attempted to describe the roles of each person above is to help you in that arena.  First of all each teacher will update your childs grades every week on Gradechecker so you will be able to track your students progress electronically.  If you see your child slipping in a particular class, please contact that teacher.  Otherwise contact the appropriate person based upon your question/concern.  We recommend e-mail or phone messages as a first step.
I hear that our children get a locker.  Will someone be available to help them open it if necessary? Every child is given their own locker and as necessary we will replace the combination lock with a key lock for students who struggle to remember the combination.  Our teacher assistants along with our secretarial staff are available to help students with locker issue.
I'm concerned that my child will get lost or confused by all the movement at SLMS?  All entering 6th grade students wil be nervous the first few days but all quickly settle down into the routine of their schedule.  For the most part they will have the same 7 classes with the same 6 teachers for the entire year, so what seems overwhelming at first will be very comfortable very quickly.
How can I get homework information from teachers to help my student? Most teachers at SLMS have websites and update them regularly.  For those of them that don't, simply request that the teacher make sure that your student writes down the homework assignment in their agenda (a habit we work on).  If needed teachers can provide you homework lists and study guides.  This request should be made to the teacher and simlutaniously notify Mr. Crudo so that he can have a teacher assistant check to ensure that your request is being carried out.
