Measurement of Student Progress (MSP)

Changes to the state assessment

State Testing 2010: Cambodian, Chinese, Korean, Punjabi, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese.

Mathematics and Reading Assessment:

Starting in the 2009-2010 school year the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) will no longer be administering the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) for students in grades 3 through 10.  The state has changed the WASL on many levels.  The name of the new test for grades 3 through 8 is called the Measurement of Student Progress (MSP).  On this assessment, the number of questions in every area has been reduced.  As a result, the time it takes to test students has been reduced, and the way the test is administered is different. (The Fife School District is supporting Surprise Lake Middle School and Columbia Junior High in piloting the on-line MSP assessments this year for Math and Reading).

Writing Assessment:

Grade seven will be assessed in writing during two scheduled days using the traditional paper-pen method.  On those same days, grade six will be given a practice assessment that will count toward a grade in their Language Arts course.

Over the years we have been very proud of our student accomplishments on these state mandated tests.  SLMS specifically has been recognized by OSPI for significant gains in Mathematics, Reading and Writing over the past five years and we look forward to the challenge of assisting our students meet these newly designed standards.
